Fishing

Texas has possibly some of the most picturesque fishing spots that you would ever see.

With the Dumaresq River flowing within a few hundred metres of the town one could not wish for a better place to while away a few hours “wetting a line” and trying to catch one or two cod, yellow bellw or jew fish.

This fishing has been enhanced by the Texas Fishing Club’s efforts, along with some Government assistance, in restocking the river with over 600,000 The Dumaresq RiverGolden Perch or “Yellow Belly” and Murray Cod fingerlings.

There are reserves with excellent fishing and camping areas within easy driving distances of Texas.

So why not visit Texas and catch a fish?

Recreational Fishing Rules & Regulations for Queensland

There are a number of rules and regulations that have to be taken into consideration when fishing in our fresh waters to ensure we protect one of our favorite pastimes.

Being on the border between Queensland and New South Wales, rules from either states have to be adhered to.  There is plenty of information on the Queensland Department of Primary Industries website with information on bag and size limits, no take species, fishing gear, closed seasons, closed waters, etc.

Some rules in place at the moment which apply to this area include closed waters at the Bonshaw Weir on the Dumaresq River, 100 metres upstream to 100 metres downstream of the weir.   On the Macintyre Brook, 200 metres upstream to 100 metres downstream of the Coolmunda Dam wall.  On the Macintyre River, from 150 metres upstream to 150 metres downstream of the Goondiwindi Weir.  On Pike Creek, from 200 metres upstream to 400 metres downstream of the Glenlyon Dam wall. (QLD DPI)  This means that there is absolutely no fishing in these areas.

Murray Cod cannot be taken from the Barwon, Macintyre or Dumaresq rivers from 1 September to 30 November.

Glenlyon Dam and Coolmunda Dam require a fishing permit for all people over the age of 18 and only applies to people using a fishing line or set line.  Permits are issued to an individual but also cover the person’s spouse if the spouse is nominated on the permit.  People under 18 do not have to have a permit.  Make sure you carry your permit with you at all times when fishing.  Failure to produce a permit may result in an on-the-spot fine.  Permits are available online from the queensland Government Gateway at www.qld.gov.au/fishing or by calling 13 13 04.  Payments can be made by credit card.  Queensland permits are also available from local businesses including the Glenlyon Dam Kiosk, Lake Coolmunda Caravan Park near Inglewood, and the Mobil Service Station at Inglewood.

Recreational Fishing Rules & Regulations for New South Wales

When fishing in New South Wales, you are required by law to pay the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee and carry a receipt showing the payment of the fee.  This applies when spear fishing, hand lining, hand gathering, trapping, bait collecting and prawn netting or when in possession of fishing gear in, on or adjacent to waters.  More detailed information on bag sizes and limits, water closures, seasons, fishing gear ect is available from the NSW fisheries website.

You can pay the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee online, by calling 1300 369 365 (Visa and Mastercard only), or locally from Hong Yuens Texas at the Office or Checkouts, the Bonshaw Store, and the Yetman Store.

The NSW fishing regulations and restrictions state that fishing is prohibited in the Dumaresq River within 100 metres downstream of the Bonshaw Weir face.  At the Goondiwindi Weir on the MacIntyre Weir, fishing is prohibited within 150 metres upstream and 150 metres downstream of the weir face.

The Murray Cod, a popular catch, has a closed season in NSW from September to November each year and bag size and limits apply at other times so remember to check.  Fishing for catfish is prohibited in all western flowing waters in NSW apart from listed western impoundments.

It is important to follow these rules and regulations in order to ensure that everyone can continue to enjoy a favourite pastime.
